It is often said that with courage, determination
and teamwork people can accomplish anything. Working together, the
most difficult and
complex tasks can be overcome. This is the power of cooperation and
this is the spirit through which cooperatives have been operated
throughout the country. The first successful cooperative was organized
in the United States by Benjamin Franklin in 1752 and continues to
operate to this day. Franklin knew that individual steps, no matter
how small, when taken collectively held great potential. He said "little
strokes fell great oaks," and today more than 100 million people
are members of 47,000 U.S. cooperatives.
