The Cooperative engages in the activities necessary
to be successful in the complex, science-intensive arena that is
sugar farming. The Cooperative provides the services of harvesting,
transporting and milling of sugarcane and the marketing of raw
sugar and blackstrap molasses. The management of these activities
is divided into three major components:
Administration - handles executive management, marketing,
environment and public affairs, accounting, data processing, payroll and
human resources.
Agricultural Operations - encompasses the harvesting and
hauling of members' sugarcane; provides agriculture and water monitoring
technical services; and manages the farmland directly owned by the Cooperative.
Plant Operations - handles the processing of the sugarcane
into raw sugar andmolasses, and is responsible for generating steam and
electrical power for the entire operation.
Collectively, our members have available to them the resources, technical and
regulatory support, marketing and legal services usually affordable by only the
largest farming operations. The Cooperative has made it possible for family farmers
to stay at the leading edge of technology, make use of the latest advancements
In science to protect and preserve the environment, and provide economic stability
and viability to an increasingly complex business.
Over 70,000 acres of sugarcane are farmed by the member-growers of Sugar Cane
Growers Cooperative of Florida From this acreage, on an annual basis over 350,000
tons of raw sugar are produced. Once refined, this is enough to serve the average
annual demand of more than 9 million Americans. In November 2002, the Cooperative
became totally vertically integrated with the joint acquisition of the Domino
Sugar refining holdings in New York, Maryland and Louisiana. A lot of hard work
is necessary to reach point of providing sugar for your table, or sugar for countless
baked,
confectionery, cereal, dairy and processed goods. It is this vital and
complex work that is the purpose of Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida.
